Englische Version
Maladaptive Daydreaming
When Black men* scream
Why do we only see anger?
When Black men* fight
Why do we only see violence?
And when Black men* eventually die
Why do we only see weakness?
Dating back to the slave trade, Black men* have been prized for their physicality and strength. Today we have only transformed this notion. We praise Black men* for their abilities on the sports field but rarely for their intellect or emotional intelligence. This stigma has been passed down through generations, taught to bottle up emotions. Seeking help for your mental health is almost unknown in the Black community, due to not only a lack in representation of Black mental health advocates, but Black people are often not taken seriously when it comes to medical/ psychological attention.
Maladaptive Daydreaming is a physical theatre piece following three individuals who try together to navigate an inner realm. A place we can go to when the noise from the real world becomes too loud. It can be our retreat, our sanctuary but can we stay there forever?
